In millions of cities and towns across North America, the best high roller gambling around is in a rather unexpected location: the workplace. Studies show that Americans and Canadians are high roller gambling at work more than every before, and that the stakes keep getting higher. At a New York law firm that declined to be named because of its high- profile clientele, attorneys, from senior partners to junior associates, wager up to thousands of dollars a year on NHL and NFL events. Every few months, a secretary who has become the de- facto person in charge of this high roller gambling makes the office rounds to collect wagers and record bets. There are two sides to high roller gambling in the workplace: proponents say it can build friendships and bring people who had previously not connected into contact with one another. However, detractors of the activity say that, in addition to taking workers’ attention away from their jobs, high roller gambling can be extremely problematic for people who may have had problems with the activity in the past. Gambling addiction treatment counselors deal with many people whose addictions began with seemingly harmless gambling at work. "It can start with sports betting around the water cooler and lead to a bookie and thousands of dollars in debt. And it’s really hard to say no to something that’s sanctioned by everyone at work, including your boss," said Phyllis Greenschiner, a Cincinnati- area therapists who deals with clients addicted to high roller gambling.
